FROST WREAKS HAVOC ACROSS FRENCH WINE REGIONS

France’s wine regions are licking their wounds after two devastating cold spells swept across the country, wreaking havoc on young vine buds. From April 18 to 29, temperatures plummeted to well below zero, often leaving growers defenceless. The impact of the frost was worsened by the advanced state of growth, in some cases a fortnight ahead of normal. A number of regions also witnessed hailstorms at the end of April and beginning of May. It is too early to assess the consequences of adverse weather for the forthcoming harvest – FranceAgriMer says temperatures will need to rise before the full extent of the damage can be evaluated.
